![]() ![]() Plot-wise it all takes off on the idea of centering on Romeo’s (Kyle Allen) former girlfriend Rosaline (Dever), a Capulet family member who is mentioned but never seen in the Shakespeare original. It is just not enough to lift this above the level of the streaming movie the 20th Century Studios and Disney release is as it hits Hulu on Friday. That certainly worked for the wonderful 1998 Best Picture Oscar winner Shakespeare in Love, but it lacks the desired punch here, instead only garnering some mild laughs along with a spirited performance by the always-impressive Kaitlyn Dever ( Booksmart, Dopesick), who plays the title role with spunk and contemporary feminist sensibility. ![]() The conceit of this adaptation, however, was to make one major change: to place it all back in the exact same period that Shakespeare did. Weber, who were responsible for the terrific films (500) Days of Summer and The Spectacular Now.Īnd it was indeed on paper originally as a book by Rebecca Serle, When You Were Mine, which placed the R&J parallel in modern times like the aforementioned films also did. Both were apparent inspirations for screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. On paper it might have sounded good, the kind of high-concept comedy popular in ’90s romps based on classics that included Ten Things I Hate About You and Clueless. ![]() Doing yet another takeoff on Romeo and Juliet hardly gets points for originality, and the latest - which focuses on Juliet’s rival for Romeo, her cousin Rosaline - is strictly for the YA crowd. ![]()
